Childcare
Many families are looking for temporary childcare while schools are closed. If you are currently enrolled in before/after school childcare with an SPS childcare partner, please look for messaging directly from your childcare provider about their capacity to serve students for full or part day. To see the complete list of childcares and contact info, visit our childcare page.
If you are not currently enrolled in childcare, please visit the Child Care Resources website or call 1-800-446-1114; they maintain lists of all licensed childcare providers in Seattle and can help you identify options.
We are working with city partners to develop some additional supports and will update this webpage when they are available.

Frequently Asked Questions
When and how will I be notified on when school starts?
We will post information on our website and social media accounts Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. We will also send direct messages to families by email, text, and phone messages.
Would strike days have to be made up?
Yes. A new school calendar would have to be negotiated and adjusted so students have 180 days in school. This decision would be made once agreement on the contract is reached. Under the current calendar, the last day of school is scheduled for Monday, June 26.
How would activities and operations be impacted?
A strike would impact everyone. SPS is working on a plan to provide pick-up meals for our students and is reaching out to community childcare providers to help support our families next week. In addition, we expect that after-school athletics would continue during any SEA strike. SPS will keep you informed of resources to help support families and students.
What about sports?
After school high school practices and games are anticipated to continue as normal.
All middle school athletic events will be postponed until after the start of school. Once the strike is resolved we will work with middle schools through the Middle School Steering Committee to determine next steps.
What are contract negotiations?
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is the contract between the district and the union and is typically set for three years. At the end of a contract’s term, the union and the district negotiate conditions, duties, and salary schedules for the next contract. If an agreement cannot be reached or conversations have stalled, a mediator may come in to bring the two parties to agreement.
Where do negotiations between SPS and SEA stand?
Contract negotiations are ongoing. We continue to work daily with SEA to come to an agreement on a contract that will best serve students and families. Please visit our webpage for additional information.
What is a strike?
A strike is an organized work stoppage that can be used to leverage contract negotiations. A vote to authorize a strike does not necessarily mean a strike will happen, it is just a step in the process of the union.
How are teacher salaries funded?
The state allocates funding for districts to pay teacher salaries. It is based on student enrollment as well as the district’s cost of living. Districts can use funding from local levies to add to teacher salaries.
