Sometimes you just know when to say goodbye. That was the case for Jon and Shannon Felix owners of Avalon Glassworks when it came to their trusty old furnace.
"It began to act up and I realized some of the parts I wanted to fix it were not replaceable."
They spent most of the month of April to tear down the old one and install their new furnace made by Canned Heat in Oregon used molybdenum electric heating elements that can heat it up well over 2500 degrees. It's more efficient power wise but it's also not quite as big. "The old one held almost 200 pounds of molten glass, the new one is 135 pounds. The new one also has a manual door vs an electric one but then again fewer moving parts make for more reliability," Jon said.
Avalon Glassworks is located at 2914 Avalon Way SW. They are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 Noon to 4pm. Or shop online at avalonglassworks.etsy.com
