Well over 100 custom cars, many of them true to the title of the event were part of White Center's Lowrider Block Party on July 20.
Sponsored by the Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery ,the EZ Duz It Car Club White Center Food Bank, and White Center CDA the event was crowded and mellow, full of food, booths and vendors,
These cars often from the 1960's and 70's are customized to a degree seldom seen, with engine parts chromed, interiors meticulously done, exterior painting perfect and frequently displaying thematic art.
This was truly a family event.
Around 5:30 the main event began after a few delays as the lowrider cars began “hydraulics hopping”. These customized vehicles use hydraulic systems to lift and bounce the front or rear end, creating an impressive bouncing effect. It’s a distinctive feature of lowrider culture. Some of them actually lack engines and are brought in via trailer just for the purpose of hopping them. The higher the hop the better.
Local artist Desmond Hansen was there showing off two of his cars a 1962 and 1964 Chevrolet Impala. Hansen painted a custom portrait of the editor of Lowrider magazine, Joe Raywho has been an influential figure in the lowrider culture. His passion for custom-painted lowriders began in the early '70s, and he eventually joined the Lifestyle Car Club. Over the years, Joe has built some of the most popular lowriders in the industry. In 2006, he was elected into the Lowrider Hall of Fame and later became the Editor for Lowrider Magazine.
From 5pm to 8pm all local area performers, hosted by Highy Hated were featured.
Jake Prendez, owner of Nepantla said, "White Center is our community and we want to do things that truly serve the community. This year we had so many people tell us how great it was." Judy Avitia-Gonzalez a co-owner of Nepantla did most of the organizing said Prendez.
