After the release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement by Sound Transit for the West Seattle Link Extension of the light rail system, the recommendation was made by the design committee to pass along their vote to the larger board for a vote on Oct. 24. That will mean the project is moving forward. Those businesses likely to be affected first will be those in North Delridge.

Among them is the Skylark Cafe which shared an update on their status via email with their fans and supporters.

Hey All!

We wanted to share an important update regarding our future. We recently had a meeting with the Sound Transit relocation team, which made the reality of our situation hit home. Sound Transit is expediting its schedule for property acquisition, and we are one of the first properties they plan to acquire. While this news is certainly unsettling, it also means we will gain access to their (albeit limited) support sooner than expected.

Here’s where things stand (Don't quote me on this, but this is how I understood the information we were provided:): The current plan will be voted on in about a month, and if approved, it will move to the Federal Government for finalization toward the end of the year. If all goes as projected, our property may be acquired early next year. This means that the countdown to finding a new location will begin.

Our goal is to stay in West Seattle, where we’ve built a wonderful community, but viable options are scarce. Wherever we end up, the amount of funding we can secure will greatly influence our ability to care for our staff and make the transition as smooth as possible. While Sound Transit will cover the physical move and provide up to $50,000 for costs like rent differences, there are significant gaps in funding. Their support does not cover essential expenses such as building out a new space or providing financial compensation for our business and employees during any closure for the move.

Right now, we face two choices: relocate or close our doors for good. Selling the business is not an option at this stage. We’re committed to fighting for our dream, continuing to share our passions, and providing a stage and safe space for everyone in the community we love.
