The much loved mural of whales painted by artist Dozfy on the Alki Beach rest rooms was defaced by taggers last Tuesday over night.
The artist said, "I got over 150 messages about it," and found the time on Friday to come out to fix it.
"I'm going to repaint it. The community has spoken, they loved the work and they wanted it back so let's say it's a reunion tour, " he said with a laugh.
Weather permitting he should have it completely repaired by next week.
"It will be close sibling of it, but you never know," he explained. He will preserve as much of what's there as he can but may change it up a bit.
He's been very busy doing "live art activations" all over the northwest. But he's also gearing up for the FIFA Worldcup and is actively seeking bars where he and his team can paint murals. He wants bars that are hosting the soccer games and do a live painting at each location over the 8 week span. "I want bars that represent different communities in Seattle, because we are going to get a lot of tourists and I want them to understand how beautiful and diverse Seattle is."
He doesn't use a coating on the work since it would add a lot of cost and in the wind and rain in that spot would wear off in any case. But he's committed to keep repairing should it get damaged again. "It's part of the gig."
He really appreciated the comments and support from people who enjoy his painting and wanted to offer a note of reassurance.
"Your favorite whales are going to be coming back real soon."
