Two years after the tragic shooting death of Ka'Don Brown, his family and friends gathered once again at the southwest corner of the Chief Sealth International High School campus to honor his memory and reiterate their ongoing quest for justice. The somber gathering marked the anniversary of the day 21-year-old Ka'Don's life was cut short.
Ka'Don's mother, Maxine Brooks, was present, continuing her steadfast efforts to keep her son's memory alive and the pressure on investigators to find definitive answers. "I am here to bring memories to my son's life," she stated, her voice filled with a familiar mix of sorrow and determination. The pain of his loss remains palpable, especially as the anniversary falls so close to his birthday. "It's just like I was happy about April, but then again, I'm not happy about April because his birthday is in April and he got murdered two weeks before his birthday," she explained, referencing his April 22nd birthday and the April 7th date of his death.
Maxine reiterated her firm belief regarding who was responsible for her son's death. "Marcel Wagner was the one that killed my son," she asserted. She noted that Wagner, who she stated was with Ka'Don the entire day of the shooting, has since died. "He was the one that got killed up there in West Seattle on the bus," she said. Marcel Wagner was fatally shot on a King County Metro Transit Bus on October 3rd, 2023, and that Miguel Rivera Dominguez was named as the suspect in that shooting. Miguel Rivera Dominguez's case has not yet gone to trial.
Despite her conviction, Maxine expressed ongoing frustration with the lack of official closure in Ka'Don's case. "The police haven't reached out to me in over a year," she stated on the one-year anniversary in 2024. She recounted a previous conversation with the detective, saying, "I feel that he's not putting an effort to solving my son's case. So I said, 'Well, what if it was your son? Wouldn't you want to know who did this to your baby?' you know, and he was like, 'Yeah, was there's still no lead and I don't have anything new else to tell you. It's the same old same old' ".
While Maxine believes she knows the truth, she explained the detective's stance: "He was like, 'Well, we don't have proof of that unless you get someone to come forward saying that they know that this person did it. Then I can't close the case'". Despite her plea to close the case based on her belief, the investigation remains open due to the lack of corroborating evidence.
Ka'Don's sister, Dwanza, also spoke at a previous gathering, expressing a personal sense of justice despite the ongoing investigation. "I believe that my brother did get his justice," she said, emphasizing that his memory would always be honored. However, she also acknowledged the broader need for the case to receive more attention. "It hasn't gotten the attention that it should and still needs," she said.
As the second anniversary of Ka'Don Brown's death passes, his family and friends continue to grapple with the pain of loss and the frustration of an unsolved case. Their annual gathering serves as a poignant reminder of a young life tragically cut short and their unwavering commitment to seeking justice for Ka'Don.
