The arson fire that damaged the historic Camp Long Lodge on November 12, of last year did more than $1 million in damage. Following the fire Diverse Earthworks from Tulalip, WA was called in to do stablization and shoring work on the damaged building.
Seattle Parks and Recreation has contracted with Diverse Earthworks through an emergency public works contract to stabilize the Camp Long Lodge Building after the fire damage occurred.
This work is being done to comply with the Hazard Correction Order Seattle Building Code Case No. 1059812-VI issued by Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections (SDCI).
This Project will stabilize the Camp Long Lodge Building post-fire to comply with the SDCI correction notice.
This work necessary to inform the next steps for the fire damaged building.
Westside Seattle reached out to Seattle Parks to inquire as to the current status of the lodge.
What is the status of the potential restoration effort and/or the Arson investigation?
- The building has been partially stabilized with shoring in place and has been upgraded from Red to Yellow Tagged by SDCI, with fire debris and mold abatement (due to the cool weather and water damage from putting out the fire) also completed. The next steps to stabilize the building require a permit for reinforcement of damaged structural elements, restoring the roof, and reinstating electric power so the building can be heated and kept dry. This work should be completed by summer and prevent the building from further deterioration. The building will remain closed to the public until funding is available for a full renovation.
Is there a chance it will be brought up to modern standards? Isn’t that required?
- The intent is for the building to be rehabilitated and upgraded to current code requirements. The building cannot be completely restored until funding is made available and it will likely be several years before the building is reopened for use again.
Has any firm been contacted about the design, restoration or any other work at Camp Long?
Design for restoration of the building has not commenced.
What is the status of the rest of the park?
- The rest of Camp Long is in operation. A portion of the Cabins lost power associated with the fire and that power will be restored between April and May in preparation for Spring and Summer activities.
Will it possibly be open for use, other than the lodge this summer?
- The park will be open and available to the public this spring and summer but the lodge will remain closed.
