Drug Take Back Day is an initiative led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to provide a safe, convenient, and anonymous way for people to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. The program began in 2010 to address the growing issue of prescription drug misuse and theft, which often starts with medications found in home medicine cabinets.
The event is held twice a year, typically in April and October, and involves thousands of collection sites across the country. These sites accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs, as well as vaping devices and cartridges (with lithium batteries removed). However, liquids, syringes, sharps, and illicit substances are not accepted.
Since its inception, the program has collected and safely destroyed millions of pounds of medications, helping to reduce the risk of drug misuse and overdose
