Robin Lindsey of SealSitters.org commissioned artist Nancy Stahl to create the banners reminding people to Share the Shore with seal pups and not disturb them under any circumstances. The banners will be placed along Alki Avenue, adjacent to the beach, where seal pups often appear during this time of year.
SealSitters, the marine mammal organization dedicated to the health and welfare of seals, whale and others is placing 10 banners on light poles along Alki Avenue. Robin Lindsey of SealSitters said, "They will be placed in September and October celebrating the return of harbor seal pups to our shores.
Pups, however, could begin appearing any day now as Seal Sitters has responded to reports of tiny pups in the Everett area - newborn pups still with the umbilicus cord attached (http://www.blubberblog.org/files/b2f6eada952ae02e6d6ee74d9ee3ff17-265.h…).
The rookeries in our area have lots of pregnant females and newborns. Most pups that visit Seattle beaches in the fall are weaned and struggling to survive on their own. All the more reason to let them rest undisturbed so they can conserve precious calories before returning to the Sound in search of food - it truly is a matter of life and death for them."
