Protestors urging a NO vote on referendum 1 were on the West Seattle Freeway overpass at 7 am Monday and got a mixture of honks, waves, thumbs up and one finger salutes from drivers. Ballots must be in the mail by Aug. 16.
There were only a few people on the overpass over the West Seattle Freeway Monday morning but they were a vocal group. They were there, as many have been in the past to draw the attention of drivers headed over the West Seattle Bridge and remind them of their view that a "no" vote on Referendum 1 is the best choice as the last day to get ballots mailed comes tomorrow.
Bud Shasteen, was there and said of his opposition,"The number one reason is the money. I don't see how they're going to finance it. They don't even have a final figure on it. They keep throwing around $3.5 billion or $6 billion and also I don't think they're going to be successful at building the thing. It would be the most difficult project they've ever tried to do. They couldn't even do the Brightwater and it was only 22 feet in diameter and this one they are proposing to build is 52 feet in diameter. The largest tunnel boring, ever in the world and I don't trust their engineers."
Another protestor waving at the passing cars said he is opposed to the tunnel for "Two reasons. One, we can't afford it right now...priorities and it is not an urgent need and two, it's the wrong decision. It will make traffic worse."
Autumn Nettey had an array of signs she made at home and said, "A reason that I don't think gets talked about a lot is the issue of the maintenance and operating costs. It's huge and we're already slashing hundreds of millions of dollars from the state budget. Now we are going to add another bill. That annual bill is going to be $1.4 million annually forever. I don't think people realize that. It's 600 times the cost of electricity for the tunnel than the other options. That's not something I'm willing to sacrifice my children's future for."
Nettey and the others did an informal survey of those drivers.
"The count was 140 supported us, 11 gave us a thumbs down and 4 flipped us off," she said.
