Duwamish River 101
When: Wednesday, September 28
Where: Bell Harbor Marina, Pier 66

*Program: 4:00 - 6:30 p.m
*Partners: Environmental Protection Agency, Duwamish River Clean Up Coalition, Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS), Seattle Marine Business Coalition Board a floating classroom and see the heart of the Duwamish industrial area representing 80 percent of Seattle's industrial land and more than 80,000 jobs, with an annual payroll of $2.5 billion. The 5-mile-long Duwamish Waterway provides commerce and jobs, as well as critical fish and wildlife habitat and public shoreline use areas. Government, community and business efforts have combined to make the waterway flow cleaner into Elliott Bay. You'll learn about marine industrial commerce, the legacy of past industrial activities, fish and wildlife habitat restoration, and Superfund cleanup plans.

*Partner: U.S. Customs and Border Protection This will be a rare chance to hear from federal agents who are the gatekeepers for thousands of passengers who enter the United States at Sea-Tac Airport each year. International traffic at Sea-Tac is on the rise, with seven new international services added since 2007. Find out how U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and specialists work together to serve and protect our country. Witness how canine units perform searches, see confiscated items from around the world, and learn how the Global Entry program expedites processing. Tour the airfield, visit the federal inspection area in the south satellite to see what international passengers see, and learn about planned improvements.

Ship Canal 101

*Partners: Foss Maritime, Kvichak Marine, Pacific Fishermen Shipyard and PFI Marine Electric, Pacific Maritime Magazine and Fishermen's News, Seattle Marine Business Coalition, Western Towboat Homeport for the North Pacific Fishing Fleet, Fishermen's Terminal is surrounded by Seattle's maritime industrial core. It is responsible for 4,000 local jobs, providing family wage jobs and contributing to our local economy. This commercial fishing generates $404 million in wages and salaries, $196 million in business revenue, and more than $37 million in state and local taxes. You'll board a floating classroom to learn about the fishing fleet and some of the businesses that have built their livelihoods along the Ship Canal.
