“It’s not about me; it’s about the faces here at Evergreen,” Tyrone Curry said at the official dedication of Evergreen High School in White Center’s new track on Oct. 28.

Curry is a multimillionaire (thanks to a lottery ticket in 2006) who continues to work as the school’s janitor and track coach even though it’s no longer needed to support his family. He donated $40,000 of his own money to help build the track – a much needed replacement for the disintegrating cinder track once in its place.
“In the twenty years I’ve been here we had a cinder track and my goal was to make it better,” he continued. “So for the athletes that are coming, the athletes that are here and the past athletes - it’s not about me; my name might be on here but it’s for Evergreen students, for our next state champions, that’s what it’s all about.”
Devonte Batello, the Evergreen athletic standout who graduated in 2010 and considers Curry his mentor and hero, said, “It really helps bring the respect back to Evergreen and it feels good to say that I went here and I see it, I use it, I love it and it really gives me something to be proud of. Thanks Tyrone, it’s beautiful.”
After the ribbon was cut, several members of Evegreen’s track team joined Curry and Highline School District officials in the first official walk around the track before unveiling the plaque forever thanking Curry, King County Parks and Recreation the Highline School District for their contribution.
Also in attendance were Jessica Emerson from King County Parks (a KC Youth Sports Facility Grant helped pay for the track), Highline School Board President Sili Savusa, Jessica Stoneback from the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council, Rod Sheffer and Andrea Johnson from HSD Facilities, Bernie Dorsay from the Highline School Board, Highlines K-12 director John Boyd, Highline Superintendent Alan Spicciati, Highline Athletic Director Terri McHahan, Evergreen Athletic Director Phil Willenbrock and Curry’s wife, Michelle.
