Officer Scott Luckie will be tweeting while on patrol out of the Southwest Precinct on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Update for Dec. 20
At the halfway point in S.W. Precinct Officer Scott Luckie's tweetalong day in South Park, he said it had been oddly slow.
"It is normally very busy," he said in an interview during a lull in the low-key action. "In fact yesterday we had a guy who was threatening traffic with a chainsaw … the day before that we arrested a professional boxer who was beating up his wife, we had a couple burglaries yesterday so it’s been very busy, especially lately."
"But now today, probably because I’m doing the Tweetalong, there has been one call in all of the Frank Sector," Luckie joked.
When asked how the tweets are managed if he gets a major crime call (such as a robbery or shooting in progress), Luckie said the first priority is to take care of the police work and once the crime scene is secured he would tweet a recap of events.
“Even if I was talking to you I’d say, 'I’ve got to go, sorry,'" he said.
Leading into my final question before letting Officer Luckie get back to work, radio chatter emerged in the background.
"Oh actually, here we go," he said. "I've got a burglary in progress."
Our interview ended abruptly and about an hour later Luckie was back on Twitter with the report:
Three suspects were arrested in the attempted burglary - one hiding in the bushes and two more pulled over in a vehicle. The vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant.
Luckie posted a photo of evidence in the case against the three men - a wet, distinctive footprint left at the crime scene. You can also click the photo above to see the evidence in a slideshow.
After the arrests were made Luckie headed back to the precinct for an extensive amount of paperwork until the work was interrupted by a call of two armed robbers stealing a cell phone in South Park.
"Could not find the armed robbers, even tried using gps on the stolen phone to get a location but the phone was turned off," he tweeted.
Around 8 p.m. Officer Luckie signed off: "Thanks for following me! Special thanks to the kids 4 the cookies and Christmas spirit (and the parents who made them)."
While the day started out slowly in South Park, the activity Officer Luckie has come to expect rang true in the afternoon.
When asked how he was chosen for Tweetalong duty, Luckie said he was volunteered by his captain, partially because he's 25 years old with a firm grasp on the technology of smartphones and Twitter.
