Preview from Sam Reed, athletic director at Chief Sealth International High School:
With 2-0 win over the defending division champion Ingraham High School (West Seattle Herald coverage of that game), the Chief Sealth Seahawks boys soccer team took another step forward in what is turning out to be an outstanding season.
Behind a high-powered offense which features 3 players in the top 6 in scoring in the Metro League (Mori Tsuchiya, 1st - 28pts, Abel Madrigal, 3rd - 24pts, Aden Fidow, 6th - 19pts), and stellar goal play by Keepers Kristian Nilssen and Luis Ramirez (9 combined shutouts) the Seahawks have outscored opponents 59-4 on the season. Helped by the coaching prowess of varsity coaches Ron Johnson and Joe Grijalva, the boys sit atop the Metro Sound division and are currently ranked 4th in the Seattle Times 3A state rankings with an 11-0-1 record.
Four games remain on the regular season schedule – all at home – including the following exciting events:
•This Friday, April 27, the Seahawks will host Metro Mountain division leaders and the #2 ranked team in state, the Bainbridge Spartans. Bainbridge played in the WIAA State Championship game last Spring and is currently 8-1-3 on the season. The varsity game will start at 6:00pm (JV starts at 4:00pm) and will be played across the street at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Admission is free.
•After a Tuesday, 5/1 match vs. Cleveland, the boys will face off against rival Nathan Hale on Wednesday 5/2, in what will double as Senior Night for the team. Seniors Neville Mensur, Simon Crean, Brandon Rosario, Jordan Luna, Quang Nguyen, Aden Fidow, Logan Smith, Antonio Garcia and Dillon Zang, have all contributed much to this program and a big crowd for their last league home match would help send them off in style. The game starts at 4:00pm.
•Finally, the Annual Carne Asada Bowl will be back on Friday, 5/4 vs. the SBOC (Seattle Bilingual Orientation Center). Former Principal John Boyd, a former principal of both schools actually, came up with the idea years ago as a way to unite two communities that share much in common – many of our past and current Chief Sealth players have transitioned into high school through the BOC – and celebrate soccer as a diverse, worldwide sport. The event features a game between the two teams, with the winners taking home a nearly 5-foot trophy, a community feast including Carne Asada prepared by Sealth’s own Delfino Munoz and a myriad of sides prepared by Sealth soccer supporters. This is yet another free event, with soccer starting at 4:00pm and food following (don’t worry the players, referees and coaches all get to eat first!). If you are interested in contributing to this event, please e-mail assistant coach Katie Hara.
Please try to get out to support these boys in their march to a hopeful State playoff berth. Metro League playoffs begin Monday, May 7.
