Tens of thousands of people drive across the West Seattle Bridge every day and as you approach the community westbound, it's easy to overlook the set of bronze statues on the right side of road. "Walking on Logs" a set of bronze statues of children designed by sculptor Phillip Levine and installed in 1998. The exuberant scupltures are frequently decorated with t-shirts or otherwise used in various organization's promotional efforts. But like any outdoor installation it requires maintenance.

This Saturday you have a chance to make a difference by giving just two hours of your time to help clean up and beautify the area around the sculptures.

The Walking on Logs Landscape Restoration Group is looking for volunteers for Saturday, April 28th for two hour shifts between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. The group is re-landscaping the area around the Walking on Logs statues with native plants and aspens to create a “Woodland Grove” theme as a backdrop to the statues. Their goal is not only more attractive landscaping for the site, but less long term maintenance by installing plants suitable for the conditions at the site.

Last weekend the group along with volunteers from the community did the prep work. Now they have 75 trees and over 500 shrubs to get into the ground and can use plenty of volunteers. They’ll have gloves on hand as well as water and snacks. They’ll also have shovels and other tools but as they have a limited supply, if you are able to bring your own shovel, that would be appreciated. The site is very wet this time of year and you can easily lose a shoe to the mud if not careful so mud boots are recommended.
