Muralist Chester Carlson works on the north wall of Red Star Pizza to bring to life an old school space theme. The mural is replacing one he did in 2010 and is part of several changes that Red Star is making.

Red Star Pizza at 7514 35th Ave. s.w. was already known for their pizza, their PeeWee Baseball teams and for their outrageous paint scheme but owners Michael Supino and Shannon Cross decided it was time to change things up.
The previous paint job, completed in September of 2010 was amazing but Supino really wanted to expand on the vintage "space age" theme he had in mind.
Chester Carlson, the muralist who was given a free hand the first time, was called again, but this time Supino had a sketch. He wanted planets, robots and spacecraft to decorate the north wall of the business. "He kind of wanted a no-batteries included old time space theme with Mars, Halley's comet, and kind of like a Space Odyssey," said Carlson.
Carlson, who works as an electrician during the day, has been doing murals with spray paint for more than 20 years he said. The mural work should be complete sometime in the next two weeks.
He was first called in to revise the interior. "We've been looking for some changes to spice things up," said Cross because they are changing the menu too. "One of the things we're bringing to the table is gluten free dough by the middle of June. We have a great crust in progress. It tastes delicious. We've been serving it to Westside School for pizza day and the kids love it." The lobby, while not complete is consistent with the space theme outside. They even have a tiny (and safe) laser display machine that shines red and green beams on the menu lending an otherworldly effect.
They are also changing hours staying open till Midnight, "or maybe 1am", said Cross also aiming at mid June.
Delivery in West Seattle is available up until 15 minutes before they close.
But Supino and Cross are not stopping there. The coffee stand that used be located at Hans VW was recently put on Craigslist since the repair shop at 35th s.w. and s.w. Graham is planning to expand.
The Red Star owners snapped it up and it is currently sitting on their back lot area. "I've been thinking about it for a long time and we already have an espresso machine but we don't want to open it here. We love our friends at Cafe Osita (the coffee shop just north of their location) so we're looking for a location."
