The Admiral District, a business association that has been going through the process of getting all its organizational elements set for the last few months, announced on Monday they have a new slogan "Welcome Aboard" (a nod to their nautical name) and a full, if somewhat tentative schedule of events.
First up is the Hi-Yu Parade on July 21. The discussion at the meeting on June 4, led by association President (and Atomic Boys owner) Parris Sadow mentioned having a boat, being built by Admiral Neighborhood Association President Katy Walum's husband Erik Walum specifically for the parade and a banner bearing the district's new porthole logo. "What we're hoping to do is invite merchants to wear something that represents their business," said Sadow, "and walk with us as part of the Admiral District. They'd be able to put out candy to the spectators, flyers, advertised specials (...) It will be like our coming out party."
Second is the Admiral Neighborhood Association Summer Concert Series where over the six evenings the Admiral District will have a table providing information about the area businesses. Five of the concerts are at Hiawatha and one will be just adjacent to the Alki Bathhouse on the beach. The concerts start July 26.
Bargains will be on display when on August 11 the first Admiral District Sidewalk Sale will take place. The group is also seeking to have a farmers market happen in conduction with the sale but this is still in the outreach and planning stage.
While nothing is planned for September, one of the most successful events the area has all year is set for late October with the return of Admiral District Treats & Treasures, a merchant sponsored Halloween celebration. Costumes, candy and a visit to every open door is meant for kids of all ages to enjoy.
For the holiday season in December the free holiday movie at the Admiral Theater will be held again but the merchants are also considering a holiday tree lighting, Christmas Caroling, and a Shop Late event.
In March it will be time for the annual Life Care Center Easter Egg Hunt.
Then the following month, most likely April 20-21, an ambitious event they are calling District Days is being considered. It would feature an outdoor sale, outdoor dining and entertainment.
The June 4 meeting also included a discussion urging more participation in the West Seattle Artwalk.
Katy Walum shared that the monthly Admiral Neighborhood Association meetings will begin at 6 pm this month. "I'm going to start to have a potluck dinner. I've just been watching the events of the last week and I'm just feeling this real urgency about having a lot more community and togetherness. We need to have the Admiral Neighborhood Association be more than just about meetings. You don't have to be going to the meeting to attend the dinner (...) Anybody in the community can come. Just bring something to eat and share. Let's have some time to chat. We're probably going to have some candidates for local office," at the next meeting said Walum.
The ANA meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the basement of the Admiral Congregational UCC from 7 to 9pm. The address is 4320 s.w. Hill Street.
