UPDATE June 30-
Despite some hurried work toward the deadline and some things that were a bit rough, Colman Pool opened on June 30 a month later than normal with swimmers lined up outside. Pool operators noted that some work was left undone or not quite complete but that didn't phase the 40 to 50 people who quickly got wet and started enjoying the renovated facility.
Normally heated to a temperature of 85 degrees the salt water pool was expected to be cooler than that for the opening weekend and it was since it takes time to heat the Olympic size pool.
Original Post
Colman Pool in Lincoln Park has been undergoing a series of improvements at a cost of $1,413,000 the last few months and is on track for its re-opening, though 30 days later than in past years, June 30. The 70 year old pool was in need of replacement of part of the pool deck, pool gutters, and the upper section of the pool shell.
After opening in 1941, this Olympic size pool has seen various improvements but none compare to the work recently completed. Some of the improvements are not on view like the replacement of infrastructure including heat exchangers, the boiler, and mechanical systems. Orca Pacific contractors was awarded the restoration contract and Seattle Parks skilled crafts workers collaborated to complete the job on time.
The Saturday and Sunday schedule for the summer is
· Noon-1:30 p.m. Lap Swim
· 1:45-4:45 p.m. Public Swim
· 5-7 p.m. Lap Swim
· 5-7 p.m. Family Swim
Colman Pool, Seattle’s only outdoor saltwater pool, is normally filled with salt water. For the protection of the new plaster liner, Parks will fill the pool with domestic water at the start the season. The amount of chlorine and the chemical balance is the same whether you have saltwater or domestic water. At the beginning of next season we will fill the pool with treated salt water from Puget Sound.
