Shaya Calvo, Sydney and Sally Calvo all love their dog Maisy, a border collie, who originally came from Kalispell, Montana as a rescue dog. "She was in a kill shelter and they were going to put her to sleep the next day," Shaya said. A vet tech drove from Seattle to Montana that night to pick her up before she was put down, and brought her back to Seattle.

"When we got her she was so malnourished that she was running and put her foot in a hole and her leg snapped. That was when she was one, and now she's almost 14 years old," Shaya explained.

They describe her as a "great frisbee dog who is totally loyal."

Maisy gets a raw food diet from Natural Pet Pantry in Burien. "She's a meat lover," said Sydney.

A "master at removing the squeaker from toys," Maisy's favorite place is McLendon's Hardware in White Center where she goes, "almost every weekend." She's become something like the store mascot according to the Calvos.

The Calvos also take Maisy to Super Happy Fun Dog for doggy day care where she has gone for ten years.

"We used to live on Vashon and she is an all out herding dog. We've moved since but she was real warrior at that time. She's slowed down a bit now," said Shaya, "She used to play frisbee until she couldn't walk. She'd go crazy."

Even at 14, "There's a little puppy in her if she sees a squirrel," said Sydney.

In her prime she, "jumped the hood of my car", said Shaya.

Maisy lost her best friend Murray, another border collie mix that was part of the Calvo household. He too was a rescue dog but Shaya describes him as, "the best dog of all time and he was kind of like her big brother. He was her protector."

The Calvos have traveled a lot and Maisy and Murray were once on the Today Show together while the Calvos were in Carmel, California. "We stayed at the Cypress Inn, which is Doris Day's hotel and out of all the dogs there (they did a special feature on travel) they picked Murray and Maisy. They got the tower suite for a couple of days for free," because they were featured said Shaya.

"He was more gregarious and he acted tough though he wasn't really tough. She was just kind of his friend. But she could run circles around him when she was younger."

Her tendency is to be both friendly and familiar and she knows, "everybody in the neighborhood. At one time or another everybody has let her into their house because they know she just wants to hang out with them. All the kids have fallen in love with her."

"She's just a really kind dog and we can totally trust her with kids. When she was younger she was a maniac but now she's just a really soft dog. I always said she was a warrior. Kids would come and want to play frisbee with her and the next thing you know they'd have a frisbee with blood on it because she would just keep going," said Shaya, "She was fierce but not mean."

Maisy is still a little rambunctious. "At school she will kick up sand. I think she got bored that we weren't playing with her enough so she will kick up sand in the air and then chase it as if it were bugs. It's unusual," said Sydney.
