Background on the creators and their film
From Rectech: The RecTech Youth Media Institute is in its fifth year at its Delridge Community Center location in West Seattle. The YMI gives low-income local teens paid on-the-job-training for eight weeks in the summer, and once a week after school during the school year. This summer RecTech YMI Coordinator Les Howle and RecTech Multi-Media Instructor Todd Vandemark worked with SIFF Futurewave’s Arianne Garden Vazquez and ten, talented teens to produce this short film.
From brainstorming at the onset to long hours spent shooting and editing, the film was produced by the interns. The 10 talented teens behind The Next Fifty: REMIXED said their topic was inspired by Seattle Center’s Next 50 celebration.
The interns tell the Herald they realized that today’s youth are the next 50, and the future is in their hands. With this in mind, they set out to interview West Seattle people on the street, journalists, and many more on their thoughts about issues, like gentrification and cultural diversity over the next 50 years.
Vazquez with SIFF said the group is “one of the most dynamic” she has ever worked with, exhibiting creativity and maturity well beyond their years (they range in age from 15 to 17).
Saturday’s screening will bring their summer internship with RechTech to an end after three months of learning the technology and skills involved in making films. Some of the teens will continue on with the after-school RecTech Youth Media Institute beginning September 13th. For more information, go to http://rectech.seattle.gov/.
From creative projects to film critiques to creating public service announcements for non-profits, they said it has been a busy summer collectively defined as “an interesting ride.”
Back in May, the last batch of RechTech interns entered a Museum of History and Industry short film competition and walked away with the top prize.
