Employing the baby cover
On Oct. 4 a man, his girlfriend and their child entered a supermarket on the 2600 block of California Ave S.W., filled up their cart, and headed for the door (no register visit involved). Two store security guards approached the couple about their lack of payment and things quickly turned physical. The male suspect later told police he lost his cool when one of the guards grabbed his girlfriend (who was holding their baby). At one point the suspect had both security guards in headlocks, but they were able to struggle free, handcuff him, and lead him to their office until police arrived. The suspect was arrested for suspicion of robbery.
Felony for juice
On Oct. 6, around 9:45 p.m., a man was walking eastbound on S.W. Barton St. near 29th Ave S.W. when he was approached by two males he casually knew by first names. The two men asked the victim if he wanted to be shot tonight and put their hands near their waists to show they might have guns. The victim said he had no interest in being shot and handed over a bag they were demanding. The suspects continued to saunter down S.W. Barton with a bag containing an old jacket and some juice.
Storage locker fails at job
A man called police on Oct. 5 to report miscellaneous items missing from his storage unit on the 2900 block of Avalon Way S.W. He had just recently rented the space to make room for a transition from residence to residence and, at the recommendation of the storage unit folks, purchased an additional beefy lock to go along with the “very flimsy” lock that comes standard with the rental. He returned a few days later, unlocked both locks (they appeared untouched) and opened his unit to find it in disarray with several things missing. Police said the locks showed no signs of being picked, yet the victim was supposedly the only one with a key.
Cupping?
A woman called 911 shortly after midnight on Sept. 21 to report a man was kicking at the glass security door of an apartment building on the 4100 block of S.W. College St. While on the phone with dispatch, she heard glass shatter and described the suspect as a male around 18 years old with no shirt. Police responded and found the glass door shattered and two socks on the ground. They entered the building to investigate and as they approached a stairwell “the odor of intoxicants became stronger and stronger.” They found the suspect, slurring and disoriented, at the bottom of the stairs with a few fresh cuts on his body and several circular bruises on his back. The suspect did not know where he was and explained the circular bruises came from “cupping” (no further explanation was given). He was arrested for trespassing and property destruction.
