In another cross league match up Sealth handled 2A opponent Foster High School in a fashion that was expected on Thursday Nov. 29.
The Bulldogs weren’t able to run with the Seahawks fast break style of play and quickly found themselves playing from behind. As the first period came to a close Sealth was in command 24-6 mostly due to the Seahawks very aggressive style of defense and their lightning fast break offense.
When Foster was able to push the ball up court Sealth quickly closed any passing lanes and forced the Bulldogs to shoot from the corners, and it was clear that Foster was not comfortable doing that.
Sealth, on the other hand, was able to score from just about anywhere on the court. The Seahawks three point shooting continues to be their go to style when there is no lane to drive.
Sealth showed great patience on offence and consistently ran down the shot clock looking for a scoring opportunity when Foster sealed off the basket. As the shot clock ran down, and with no where to go, Sealth’s attackers simply pulled up for a three pointer or a long two point shot. When Foster came out to challenge, Sealth guards Aaron Knox or Bronte’ Corbray would drive to the hoop for the score.
The first half ended with the Seahawks up 40-15, and while this score seemed comfortable there was one glaring aspect to this team that head coach Colin Slingsby and his staff needs to work on; the team gets comfortable and relaxes when they have a big lead. They gave up six points to Foster in the last 58 seconds of the half.
This happened again in the closing minutes of the game. With a substantial lead of 64-37 the Seahawks allowed Foster to try and get back into the contest.
Even though coach Slingsby and staff were screaming at the team to get back into position the boys on the court seemed unconcerned, probably due to the large lead. This should be troubling to Sealth fans. The Seahawks will be facing more talented opponents in the upcoming weeks and the games will be much closer. While this is a talented Seahawk team they don’t seem to have the killer instinct of a great team. The actual score in this game should have been something like 92-24 based on the first period scoring… not 69-45.
When Sealth learns to be killers on the court they could vie for the state title. Until they learn to take no prisoners they will just be a good basketball team.
Sealth’s next opponent will be test when Eastside Catholic comes here next Tuesday.
