Annie Kolb-Nelson shared the word that the signs warning about contamination caused by a small overflow at the Barton Pump Station last Saturday have now been removed. Kolb-Nelson wrote, "Signs were removed yesterday. Again, this was a pretty localized event with minimal impact and none of our samples showed elevated bacteria levels, which means little if any wastewater reached the Sound.

Still, whenever we think an event might pose a possible public health or environmental impact, we’d rather err on the side of caution and let folks know."

Barton Pump Station operating normally following pipe leak

Incident poses minimal impact; beach will reopen following Public Health approval

An estimated five to 50 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a leaking pipe at King County’s Barton Pump Station on Saturday evening.

A welded cap blew off of a sewer line near the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal around dusk, causing wastewater to periodically leak out of the pipe. To stop the leak, crews temporarily shut down one of the pumps to slow flows and reduce pressure in the line. The system resumed normal operation and the pipe was repaired.

Cleanup crews deployed Saturday evening did not find debris typically associated with a wastewater overflow, further confirming the incident’s minimal impact.

Because of the pump station’s proximity to Puget Sound, crews posted the nearby beach as closed and took water quality samples as a precaution. Initial sample results showed normal bacteria levels, and King County will reopen the beach following approval from Public Health Seattle & King County.

A pipe cap north of the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal at the Barton Pump Station failed on Saturday night (March 2), causing a wastewater overflow into Puget Sound. System operating normally, crews begin cleanup

Crews with King County’s clean-water utility responded quickly to a wastewater overflow at Barton Pump Station on Saturday evening.

An undetermined amount of wastewater overflowed from a blown cap on a pipe north of the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal at about 7 p.m. To stop the leak, crews temporarily shut down one of the pumps to slow flows and reduce pressure in the line. The system resumed normal operation, though the cause of the overflow is still under investigation.

Crews initiated cleanup this evening and reported the overflow to health and regulatory agencies. Employees will make additional site assessments, post the beach as closed and take water quality samples when daylight resumes.
