The Seattle Fire Department and Seattle Police Department quickly responded to the 4500 block of 37th Ave SW for a potential arson call around 11:27pm on March 18. Upon arriving they found a woodpile stacked up against an apartment building with smoldering embers.

One of the tenants Tim Spitzer talked with the Herald. " I live in the upstairs apartment, I was laying in bed watching tv, and I could smell smoke and it didn't smell like somebody was cooking so I put my clothes on, went out the back door first and it didn't smell out there so I came out the front door and walked down the stairs and there is a guy crouched down by the stairs lighting a fire and I was like what are you doing and the person crouched said I'm just trying to stay warm man, I said put that out right now and get out of here I'm calling the cops, so I walked back upstairs, grabbed my cell phone and when I came back down he was gone."

Kyle Moore, PIO of SFD said the fire investigators determined it was an incendiary fire that was "self extinguished", there was no damage and the case was turned over to the arson/bomb squad.
