LETTER: WSHS Class of 1962 spent the money right
Mon, 06/03/2013
Dear Editor,
The class of '62 raised a great deal of money for our 50th and I would like to share what we did with it. It was not all coordinated before the Chinook deadline, but I am very proud of our efforts. Also, check out the Greenhouse if you are coming to the ASR on the 7th!
Hi all;
Here is some information on where the money we raised went. We, as a committee, are very proud of all who contributed to make these donations possible.
Hi everyone - your 50th reunion committee has been working this past year to think of creative ways to use your generous donations , the profits from our auction and golf tournament and the sale of t shirts and pins - all to benefit students at West Seattle High School - Here is what we have done on behalf of the class of 1962
1. We purchased a GREENHOUSE - yes a Costco Greenhouse - it is installed on the outdoor space off of room 262 - and has already been used to grow flowers sold in Mothers Day baskets - the Horticulture Club, Science classes, Special needs students and other groups are using this as a money making area - There was already a pad in place, water etc. when W.S. was remodeled - but the funds were used up before this project was completed - so we finished it for them - we even gave them $$ for supplies - a memorial placque has been put up to thank the class of 1962
2. There is a "not for profit" group called INVESTED.ORG ( it used to be called the HAAS Foundation) you donate to a specific school in the Seattle Public School system - We designated West Seattle High School and our funds are matched by InvestEd. the money is given to the school counselor -no strings attached - to use for shoes, athletic gear, tooth brushes, school supplies, bus fare ,lunch, everyday living necessities - no restrictions and it is received immediately - teachers request things for their students Invested matched our $500 donation.
3. We donated to the Alumni Association to help with the publishing of the Chinook Newspaper we all just received and for mailing and supplies
4. Two students in the Culinary Arts Program at West Seattle - Garrison Smith and Kalani Meligro have been awarded $1000 scholarships .
Garrison will attend N.W. Culinary Institute in Vancouver, Wa. and Kalani will be going to South Seattle Community College - our scholarships were designated for Vocational students - The Scholarship chairperson on the Alumni Board did the interviewing and we discussed the candidates and their qualification and a decision was reached - Hopefully they will be introduced at the general meeting on June 7th
We think the Class of 1962 has helped to further the education of the students at West Seattle High School through these donations -
We tried to reach a variety of students. We wanted to help them see that we all want them to succeed and move forward with their hopes and dreams.
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE COMMITTEE - Judy Lowdon Russell, Ginny Rhodes Montgomery, Mary McMullen Heuschele, Wayne Heuschele, Pam Seppi Dahl, Rodney Saxby, Gary Stackhouse, Mary Morris Stackhouse, Ed Ogle, Bill Urlivich, Shirley S. Ross, Dorothy Hartnett Parmenter. Tom Medeen chaired our Golf tourny and Zane Baker Photographics put together our music and video.
