Too drunk to steal, but still OK to fight
As August 11th approached the midnight reset, two teenagers were spotted loitering in the liquor section of a supermarket on the 4700 block of 42nd Ave. S.W. by an employee at the customer service counter. “This store, along with other grocery stores, have experienced a growing problem with the theft of liquor from their premises,” (according to the police report) so the employee walked towards the teens amongst the booze. As he approached, Teen #1 walked away towards west-facing entry doors, clinging and clanging and clutching his belt line to keep two bottle of liquor stashed under his shirt under control. The employee confronted Teen #1 in the floral section, demanding he give up the bottles and leave immediately. The teen, appearing intoxicated, stumbled into some immovable objects in the floral section and dropped a bottle of New Amsterdam Red Berry vodka . He regained footing and escaped through the exit with the other bottle. Teen #2, who also appeared intoxicated according to employees, was next seen casually walking towards the exit with bags of Lays BBQ chips and Doritos. When asked if he intended to purchase his treats, the teen took a clumsy haymaker swing at the employee, missing completely and stumbling into some shopping carts. He then fell onto his bags of chips, bursting them both open and spraying salty snacks near and far. He got back up, went into boxing stance, and started throwing punches, hitting one of the employees in the face resulting in a cut lower lip. The teen ran outside, but continued to challenge the store to a fight before running away southbound. “Due to other high priority calls, police units were not available to be dispatched immediately,” according to the report. Police are looking over surveillance video in an attempt to identify their suspects.
Seven-year-old teams up with dog to keep the burglars out
At 11 a.m. on Aug. 9 a father was downstairs at his S.W. Charlestown St. home while his seven-year-old son was upstairs. Suddenly, the son saw three young males walk onto the property and peer into the front windows, and then work their way around to peer into the living room window where they made eye contact with the boy. At that moment, the family dog started barking at the intruders. By the time the father came upstairs, the potential burglars were long gone.
Last-minute theft
A couple had just sold their 25th Ave. S.W. home on August 9 and the final building inspection with the seller’s agent was taking place when they noticed the back door was kicked in. While the vast majority of the couple’s belongings were already in storage, someone stole their remaining electronics and jewelry valued at around $4000.
