White Center Storefront Deputy BJ Myers, speaking to the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council on Sept. 6, shared the latest in crime trends for North Highline. Here are the highlights:
- Myers said North Highline, in addition to West Seattle, Arbor Heights (a W.S. neighborhood) and Burien have all experienced higher than normal summertime burglary, car prowl and auto theft numbers. He hopes those numbers will dip back down as summer comes to a close.
- The Top Hat neighborhood of North Highline has been getting hit especially hard by property crime, according to Myers. He encouraged residents to keep valuables out of their cars, communicate with neighbors, and call 911 “if you see something funny.”
- NHUAC President Barbara Dobkin brought in a plastic liquor security cap she found at North Shorewood Park recently and several people chimed in to say they’ve been seeing them all over town. Liquor theft from grocery stores has been a problem since privatization took place in 2012, and these caps are evidence of that trend, Myers said. He encouraged citizens to let him know where they find the caps (Benjamin.myers[at]kingcounty[dot]gov) and/or call the store where the security cap came from. Myers said the majority are coming from the Roxhill Safeway.
- King County Sheriff’s Office Crime Analyst J. Hobbs compiled crime numbers for August. In North Highline there were 119 Part 1 crimes reported (homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, rape, larceny, vehicle thefts, arson) and 103 Part 2 crimes (other assaults, fraud, possession of stolen property, vandalism, vice, sex offenses, controlled substance violations, DUI, concealed weapons, fights, trespass, public hazard/nuisance).
