Pregnant clerk threatened with knife
Police were called to a convenience store on the 2600 block of Barton St. in the Westwood Village shopping center on Nov. 19 concerning a robbery with a knife. The clerk/victim involved in the incident was described in the report as “noticeably pregnant”.
At 1:30 p.m. the victim heard a loud crashing sound from the liquor section of the store. When she went to investigate she saw a man (the suspect) standing over a broken bottle of Jim Beam in the aisle. The victim assured him that she would get another employee to come and clean it up soon. At that point the suspect pulled his shirt back to reveal a large knife tucked into his pants with the handle showing. Catching the silent message he was sending the victim calmly asked the suspect to follow her to front of the store and turned around and began walking.
The suspect followed and then ran out the door once they reached the cash register. It was later discovered that the suspect had made off with two other liquor bottles. Loss prevention officers were able to supply the responding officers with video surveillance of the suspect. The suspect remains at large.
Pepper spray shoplifting
On Nov. 19 at a food mart on the 5200 block of Delridge WY S.W. a shoplifting involving three suspects and can of pepper spray was reported to police around 4:30 p.m. The victim, an employee with the store, was treated for the spraying to the face by the Seattle Fire Department while police investigated.
The victim explained to officers that the three suspects had entered the store and gone to the back where the beer is kept and began filling a leather duffle bag with beers. The victim observed the suspects packing away beer and stood in front of the doors waiting for the suspects to leave. When they approached he confronted them about the attempted theft and ordered them to show ID and pay for the beer.
One of the suspects pulled a container of pepper spray attached to a lanyard with keys and began spraying the victim in the eyes. The victim fought back and wrestled with the suspect for the lanyard. While this was going on the other suspects dashed out of the store. The victim eventually managed to get the lanyard while the third suspect ran away.
A few seconds later two of the suspects reappeared at the door and demanded the lanyard back, stating that they needed the house-keys that were attached to it. The clerk fought with these suspects again while they snatched cigarettes and other small items before running away.
Police were given a surveillance video that clearly showed the incidents and the suspects. The lanyard with the keys and pepper spray was submitted into evidence for finger printing. The suspect remain at large.
