Michael Clowny and Andrea Ramirez of Cafe Osita were shocked at the recent break ins to the cafe but then amazed at the support from the community.
"It's a great place to have bad things happen to you" said Andrea Ramirez, owner of Cafe Osita on 35th Ave SW. The cafe has been broken into twice in recent weeks but the response from the community has been impressive.
Last June the Cafe, at 7349 35th SW, was broken into resulting in a loss of $1200. Then this past Thursday the cafe was burglarized again but, "In this case they didn't get any cash so it's more like $700 to $800, " said Ramirez.
The criminals broke through the glass front door both times, in the very early morning hours.
But following the most recent break in, neighbors have been coming forward and not only recognizing the cafe as a community asset, offering many ideas on how to help but making cash donations, over tipping and lots of support for the small business. There's even a fund raising page set up on CrowdRise.com for that purpose if you'd like to donate to help them recover some of their losses.
They are making changes both internally and externally to improve security from cameras to better locks and other measures.
The people who have donated outside of that fund, last time and this time and really have just come in to give us encouragement and support I want to put a shout out to them because we really appreciate it," said Ramirez.
The cafe which opened in 2009 is currently looking to expand, or perhaps change locations at some point. "Both Mike and I want to get more into food and more creation," Ramirez said.
