Garage robbery
A homeowner on the 2100 block of 45th Avenue S.W. called police at 6:43 a.m. on Thurs., May 19 to report that during the night, a burglar had entered his detached garage and stolen several items. Missing were various tools, sporting goods and camping equipment. The estimated loss was approximately $5,000. Security alarm thwarts burglar
Officers responded to a call for a residential alarm around 8:15 a.m. on Fri., May 20 on the 5600 block of 40th Avenue S.W. A back door had been forced open at a single-family home. The backyard, which backs up to Fauntleroy Way S.W., is not visible from the street because of trees and bushes. There were no suspects around and the house had not been rummaged. A neighbor who had a key to the home said the homeowner was out of town. She also walked through the house and said it did not appear as though anything was missing. Officers believed that a burglar kicked in the door but ran once the alarm went off. The officers took photos of the door ands screwed it from the inside. The neighbor re-set the alarm and locked the door.
Missing keys leads to burglary
A man called police around 3 p.m. on Sat., May 21 to report that his apartment, located on the 1900 block of California Avenue S.W., had been burglarized. The victim had left his apartment around 12:30 p.m. and returned two hours later and found the front door unlocked. He said he had set the deadbolt before leaving.
The victim went inside and found drawers in the bedroom opened and rummaged through, leaving clothing strewn around. The burglar had also rifled through the bedroom closet and bathroom cabinets. Jewelry boxes, two backpacks, a Rolex watch box and Bose ear buds were missing.
Two laptop computers, an iPad, several flatscreen TVs and other expensive electronics remained in the unit. Officers were unable to find any fingerprints.
A witness on the scene said she had driven into the apartment building garage at about 1:45 p.m. and saw two individuals whom she did not recognize as tenants, walk away from the garage door area and leave east towards California Avenue S.W. She said they did not appear to be carrying anything.
The on-site maintenance man said that a lockbox containing keys to all the apartments in the complex was missing from the office, which could explain how the apartment was entered. The property manager is re-keying the entire complex.
