Chief Sealth International High School took part in mock elections held Nov. 1, voting on the same measures and candidates as adults. The ballots were all on computers and part of an effort to promote civic engagement.
The Mock Election is a non-partisan, educational event that teaches kids to be informed voters. Nearly 130,000 students have voted in Washington's annual Mock Election since 2004.
The results of the mock election will be published on the Washington State, Secretary of State's page on the afternoon of Nov. 4. A tab on the site will indicate results broken out by city, and school.
Sealth Social Studies teacher Noah Zeichner explained that 1000 students at Sealth would vote (the school has 1120 students) and that they tend to lean Democrat in this area.
"The main idea is to start to instill the importance of civic engagement and voting in them now before they turn 18 so the can practice now and continue voting for many years to come."
