McPhee stands out for Cardinal
Mount Rainier High School graduate Brittany McPhee is having a solid season for the Stanford Cardinal women's basketball team, helping it to the Pac-12 tournament title and into the NCAA tournament.
McPhee carries a 12.7 points per game average into NCAA action over 32 games. She has also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists and has a total of 23 steals and 27 blocks.
McPhee is a 6-foot tall junior guard.
The Cardinal opens the NCAA tournament with a 10:30 a.m. Saturday contest against New Mexico State.
Jordan leads Falcons in tourney
McPhee's twin sister Jordan led the Seattle Pacific University Falcons in scoring in their two GNAC tournament games.
She scored a team-high 15 in their 71-60 opening win over Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, March 9 before leading with 11 in a 76-68 semifinal loss to Alaska Anchorage the next day that ended their season.
McPhee averaged 11.2 points over 30 games with 5.2 rebounds and had a total of 56 assists, 53 steals and 10 blocked shots.
Collier, Huskies enter "Big Dance"
Seattle Christian graduate Katie Collier and the University of Washington women's basketball tournament as a No. 3 seed, playing Montana State in a 6 p.m. Saturday home game that can be seen on ESPN2.
Collier played in 31 of the Huskies' 32 games, averaging 6.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists. The senior also totaled 14 steals and 34 blocks.
Giomi, Ducks to play Temple
West Seattle graduate Lydia Giomi and the University of Oregon Ducks are also bound for the NCAA tournament, playing Temple at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Durham, N.C. on ESPN2.
The 6-foot-6 freshman Giomi played in the team's seven preseason games, scoring seven points, hauling down seven rebounds and coming through with one steal.
Season ends for Gandy's Vikings
The season ended Saturday, March 11 for Mount Rainier graduate Kiana Gandy and the Western Washington University Vikings as they took an 80-68 loss to California Baptist at the NCAA Division II West Regional held in Anchorage.
Gandy averaged 12.3 points over 32 games along with 4.3 rebounds. She had a total of 55 assists, 21 blocks and 21 steals.
Kela, Barnette return for Rangers
Chief Sealth graduate Keone Kela and Thomas Jefferson graduate Tony Barnette are back in the bullpen for the Texas Rangers.
Kela has not allowed a run and struck out five over his first two innings of work in spring training.
Barnette has one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.
Brett back after sitting out season
Highline graduate Ryan Brett has come back from sitting out last season with injury problems for the Durham Bulls of the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
Brett is in the Major League Rays' spring training camp, hitting an impressive 7-for-18 for a .389 average.. He has one double, one home run, four RBI and three runs scored so far.
Brett plays second base.
Ishikawa is still a free agent
Federal Way graduate Travis Ishikawa is still a free agent who mostly plays first base but can also pinch hit and play in the outfield.
The left-handed hitting Ishikawa, who was the home run hitting hero for the San Francisco Giants in their National League Championship Series deciding win over the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014, finished last season with the Sacramento Rivercats of the Giants' organization.
Conger now with Reno Aces
Federal Way native Hank Conger is now playing on a minor league contract for the Reno Aces of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
The veteran catcher split last season with the Tampa Bay Rays and their Durham Bulls minor league team.
