A grant from Google will send a number of local high school students with high barriers to graduation to spend two summers at UW and attend daily seminars from top faculty. While at UW, they will acquire college study and survival skills and explore exciting and innovative STEM electives.
The Google grant will help the UW Foundation bolster its Math Science Upward Bound (MSUB) program, which is designed for students from Chief Sealth High School who have higher barriers to graduating high school and attending college.
Seventy-eight percent of MSUB students are both low-income and the first generation in their family to attend college. In the last school year, MSUB saw 100% of its students graduate from high school and 94% successfully enroll in college programs. The grant money MSUB receives from Google will allow MSUB to further develop its STEM survival course and provide low-income/first-generation college students with equal access to secondary education.
In addition to having access to technology like graphing calculators and 3D printers and spending two summers at UW, students will also receive tutoring and advising at their schools, help with college applications, admission tests, financial aid, and scholarships.
