Two juveniles and one adult were arrested in the murder of Derek Juarez Lopez who was stabbed near Westcrest Park on Sept. 6, 2017. Juarez-Lopez was able to call his sister before he lost consciousness. He later died.
According to published reports, he was stabbed by an 18 year old after he was approached by teens who attacked him to rob him of marijuana. The 18 year old is being investigated for homicide and is being held on $750,000 bail.
In the call to his sister her said, "They jumped me and they stabbed me," then the phone was disconnected.
Police found him near Sixth Avenue SW and SW Cambridge Street, across from Westcrest Park and called paramedics who took him to Harborview Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to reports his sister informed SPD that Juarez-Lopez was headed to meet his girlfriend for her birthday that morning.
Court records say that Investigators searched his phone and learned that he met with his girlfriend to sell or use drugs.
The records say that she met him and led him to an area where three people armed with knives jumped and attacked him, and she ran.
Police were tipped by an informant as to the identities of the suspects, and that the informant was told about the assault from Juarez-Lopez's girlfriend.
Court documents say that the plan was to get him to the park to steal his marijuana but "things got out of hand," The 18-year-old suspect stabbed Juarez-Lopez and the other suspects kicked and stomped him.
