On golf course, who's pigeon?

Publisher

Golfers at Rainier, Glenacres and West Seattle are used to seeing many crows, ducks, squirrels, robins, swallows and an occasional fox or eagle.

But they don't see too many pigeons.

This week I was playing Rainier and saw a fat pigeon standing on a metal box near the 10th green. As I got nearer to him he didn't move or flee like most wild things.

Squirrels often raid your golf cart in search of a candy bar or half-eaten sandwich.

Positions on Initiatives wanted

Most elected representatives are scrutinized and challenged on a daily basis. Not so in the 33rd Legislative District.

But important issues can no longer be avoided.

As a resident voter in the 33rd District, I want to "smoke out" our three elected representatives and get real answers.

The Democratic organization have won handily in this district for the past 22 years, but I believe that no one political philosophy should own this area.

Mr. Upthegrove, Ms. Schual-Berke, and Ms. Keiser as self-proclaimed independent populists have been given a pass.

'We've got to prepare all kids for a higher level'

Editor's Note: With Highline schools set to resume classes on Wednesday, Sept. 7, Times/News reporter Eric Mathison recently talked with new Superintendent John Welch. Welch, previously deputy superintendent, replaced the retiring Dr. Joe McGeehan on July 1. Mathison has covered Highline schools for five years.

I assume you see taking over for Joe McGeehan as a big challenge.

John Welch: Big shoes to fill.
