Times has roots in Highline

As told by Jerry Robinson

Back in 1945 Vance Orchard, a young graduate of Highline High School with natural artistic skills and a way with word weaving decided his growing community needed a newspaper so he started one. He called it the Glendale-Highline Gazette and he had little money but he had ambition and a friendly banker.

He wrote all the stories and sold the ads to a tiny group of merchants. When I first met him he was selling ads for the Valley Publishing Company in Kent having sold his struggling paper to John Muller.

Eleanore Sjodin WILCOX

Eleanore Sjodin Wilcox was born in 1913, and died on Aug. 16, 2005, in Ballard.

Eleanore was a long-time resident of Burien. She was married to Oro Wilcox for 42 years when he died unexpectedly.

Eleanore was a woman of many talents, including being a published poet, a life-time member of the Orthopedic Guild and a generous benefactor to many charities.

Eleanore is survived by her loving sons, Wayne Wilcox and Peter Wilcox; grandchildren Franklin Wilcox and Melinda (Wilcox) Morgan; and great-grandchild Franklin Morgan.

Violet TIMMS

The staff and clients of the Burien Arts Gallery will sadly miss Violet Timms, who died August 1 of lung cancer.

"Vi" was the epitome of the perfect art gallery volunteer - knowledgeable, efficient, witty and gracious. Her charming British accent was a delight to the ear.

Vi Timms was a good friend and truly a "class act."

At her request, there will be no service.

Cooking might not eggcell, but he Maytag the laundry

Publisher

Now that Elsbeth has me somewhat trained in the culinary arts, I eggcel at boiling cackleberries for exactly five minutes while also making the coffee and toasting anguished muffins while she is upstairs in the shower (I guess).

But she is never content. In fact, she has been slowly expanding my domestic duties. I have now earned a merit badge for making the bed.

After 60 years, we're still here

Times/News

There's not too many businesses still around here from my Burien boyhood.

I'm working for one of the few that predates me.

The Highline Times is celebrating its 60th anniversary tonight (Wednesday) with a big party and fundraiser for the Hi-Liners at the Burien Elks.

My parents avidly read the Highline Times and as a budding newspaperaholic I scanned it, too.

The Times traces its beginnings to the Highline-Glendale Gazette, started in 1945. A year later it consolidated with the Burien Times and became the Highline Times.

New school-construction bond urged

Times/News

Voters in the Highline School District may be asked in March to approve another bond measure to build four new elementary schools and finance other district upgrades.

A fifth elementary would also be rebuilt using state matching funds if voters approve the bond.

In March 2002, voters passed a $189. 5 million bond after two previous rejections.

"The first phase covered about one-third of what we need," board president Tom Slattery commented at the Aug. 10 board meeting.

Board members will hold a work session on Aug.
