Green recalls 15 exciting years as one of the city's first employees

With 15 years of memories still fresh in her mind, Chris Green said farewell to a long career of civil service.

In one of her last days on the job, Federal Way's city clerk shuffled a stack of papers, making room for a large bouquet of flowers. A weekly planner, filled with scribbled appointments that end abruptly after the first week of August, covers most of the surface of her desk.

The Tooth Fairy forgets too

If you have grandchildren, you know that one of the chief compensatory joys of getting older is time spent with them. Each visit gives you an opportunity to teach them something, to pass along some acquired wisdom, and to make up for the deficiencies in how you raised their parent.

The past comes back to us in mental snapshots. We tend to remember the pleasant things more readily than the unpleasant, when we remember anything at all. Or when we run across something that has emotional value.

I found a little manila envelope recently with a child's tooth in it.

Swimmers place at all-city meet

Some good swims all over the place for Marine Hills and Twin Lakes summer swim league teams, but the most impressive of it all team-wise was the relay foursome of Kayla Ramey, Kaia Barth, Amber Cratsenberg and Savannah Coe. who broke two all-city records for 12 and under girls at the Blueridge pool in Ballard Tuesday.

They won the medley and free relays, but Fish and the Tree coach Suzanne Rychlik noted which of the two was most notable.

"The 11 and 12 girls are very strong," said Rychlik.

Goding to oppose Tzegai

Mengstab Tzegai, who was appointed to the Highline school board last year, will have to defeat Susan Goding of North Highline in the November election to retain his seat.

Julie Burr Spani of Burien is running unopposed for the open school position to replace board vice president Steve Denmark.

Denmark is running for the Burien City Council seat currently held by Councilwoman Joan McGilton instead of seeking re-election to the school board.

Wells takes on Patterson

Orin Wells, a Republican from Kent, announced last week he will oppose King County Councilwoman Julia Patterson, D-SeaTac, in the November general election.

Wells and Patterson are running in the new King County Council District 5, which was created earlier this year after voters approved a ballot measure to reduce the number of council members from 13 to nine.

District 5 includes part of the Highline community.

Two HCC employees receive top awards

An education instructor and a faculty secretary have earned Highline Community College's two premier employee awards for the 2004-2005 academic year.

An instructor in the Education department, Joan Graham has won the Outstanding Faculty Award, which comes with a $1,500 cash award donated by Puget Sound Energy.

She was recognized by her colleagues and several students in their nomination materials for her"excellence in teaching, expertise in and contribution to our discipline, and service to our students, the college, and the broader community."
