SR-509 extension on hold again

Times/News

Just like many other times since the project was revived in the early 1990s, the State Route 509 extension program is again partially on hold.

The reason is Initiative 912 - the ballot measure that would roll back the nine and half-cent gas tax approved by state legislators earlier this year.

The Legislature earmarked $30 million for the extension project through the gas tax, but Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) staffers are waiting to see what voters will do in November concerning I-912.

Burien a special place

Our neighborhood in the early 1940s, we were so lucky to be kids then.

We roamed thru the woods played and climbed the big trees where Highline Medical Center is. We walked most everywhere as our fathers drove the car to work, very few mothers drove then.

I remember when the carnival would come to Burien, all of us would collect beer bottles, from neighbors and along the road, too. We would take them to Bill's Tavern on 151st and Ambaum or Mable's Tavern further up Ambaum.

We also went to Lake Burien to swim a lot before it was private. Mr.

not a "liberal conspiracy"

In her Aug. 3 letter, ex-Judge Burrage implied that the motivation behind the city's towing contract was a "liberal conspiracy" designed solely to force Gary Petersen off the council.

This is totally inaccurate and is purely political fiction intended to divide our community.

As a lawyer, she must understand that the absence of a "written contract" created a liability exposure for the taxpayers of Des Moines.

Writers claims debunked

Jeanette Burrage's claim Des Moines city council members associated with ex-mayor Don Wasson are "conservatives" does a disservice to persons with true conservative values.

Her admission "Mr. Wasson certainly needed training in parliamentary procedure" is similarly hysterical.

The Public Disclosure Commission investigation that found $60,000 in concealed campaign contributions supporting the "conservatives" led to Wasson's resignation.

Treatment can continue

My husband and I want to extend our gratitude to the many community members, businesses, friends and family that were involved in the Go Siena Grow! benefit for our severely brain-injured daughter, Siena.

The Tin Room hosted a Go Siena Grow! benefit buffet that Dan the Sausageman, Sweet Petula's and Maplewild Bakery displayed and sold tickets to the event.

Approximately $13,000 was raised from the benefit.
