City Council Race Averill supports taxing

In her second run for the Seattle City Council, Linda Averill has taken on three-term Council President Jan Drago because she "most exemplifies the mayor's agenda" and because "I do not need a poll to decide which position to run for."

Averill, a Metro bus driver and a member of the Freedom Socialist Party, was referring to candidate Casey Corr who pulled out of a race against Councilman Richard Conlin to also oppose Drago after he got results of a poll that said Drago would be more vulnerable than Conlin.

King County Council Pottharst says visibility

Independent candidate for King County Council, District 4, Ed Pottharst, said he admits he doesn't have all the answers to the diverse transit, maintenance and education problems afflicting Ballard and other neighborhoods. But he believes that by working together with community groups and other organizations, the issues can be resolved.

"Accessibility is the key to success," he said in an interview last week.

Bollinger to lead Beavers

NEWS-TRIBUNE

When the Ballard Beavers kickoff their season against the Bothell Cougars this Friday they'll field a young squad led by sophomore quarterback Joey Bollinger.

As a freshman last season, it was Bollinger who was sent late into the game against Bothell, as both teams opened the year at the Emerald City Kickoff at Qwest Field in front of a packed house. Bollinger replaced second string quarterback Cameron Wells who got hurt.

Boy's tennis team has new 'pro-coach'

Brad Hamilton, the new boy's tennis coach at Ballard High School, brings 23 years of professional experience to the program as the Beavers prepare for the 2005 season.

When he was a student at Penninsula High School, Hamilton joined the tennis team with no experience in the sport and rose to the top in singles and in doubles.

As one of four tennis professionals at the Forest Crest Athletic Club, Hamilton has given private lessons to kids as young as six years and adults up to 65 years old.

Robert Daniel

GAGNAT

We are sorry to report the passing of Robert Daniel Gagnat on Aug. 4, 2005. Rob was born in Eugene, Ore., on July 7, 1950, and moved while very young to West Seattle where he lived with his father Robert (Bob), mother Hazel, and older sister Susan. The family moved to the Sunnydale area in 1957, long before 12th Avenue South became the third runway at Sea-Tac Airport.

During the 1950s and the 60s, Sunnydale with its creeks, small farms, and many fields and gullies, was a peaceful and fun place for kids to roam.

Roy G. MCKINNEY

Roy G. McKinney, age 85, passed away on Aug. 22, 2005, in Burien due to lung cancer.

Roy is survived by his two sons, Buck (Maureen) and Danny (Linda) McKinney; a daughter, Vicky Pike; five grandchildren, Amy, Lonny, Joyce, Corey and Chris; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harry McKinney (Ruby); two sisters, Lucille Kidd and Louise Nelson (Arne); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1999.

A committal service was held Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial in SeaTac.

Henry 'Jerry'

August PETERSEN

Henry was born Aug. 1, 1911, in Seattle, and passed away Aug. 8, 2005, at the age of 94. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Merchant Marine. Because of his involvement with the Burien Elks Club, he received awards for outstanding lodge participation and contributions to the Elks Therapy Program for Children.

He resided in Burien with his family for 63 years while he owned and operated the family pharmacy, Mayrand Prescription Drugs in Seattle.

Vicky Deanne

WALBAUM

Vicky Deanne Walbaum was the wife of 41 years to William E. Walbaum; Mom to Kristi, Marylynn and Nicole; Nana to Alex, Shane, Katelyn and Colby; and sister to Malcolm.

At the age of 61, Vicky left this life to be with her parents Gilbert and Gert Rorke and her brother Doug. After a nearly five-year battle with cancer, peace and comfort were finally hers on Aug. 20.

A celebration of her life was held on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at St. John's Episcopal Church in West Seattle.
