Buzz brings home consolation title

Buzz state champs ! Buzz national consolation round champs !

That is the Federal Way Buzz, or the Seattle Baseball Academy Buzz.

The Buzz went 43-8 overall and won their Mickey Mantle league with a 23-4 record. They also won some prestigious area tournaments. and then won the state tournament and won the consolation bracket of the CABA World Series.

Mostly, the Buzz players hail from this area, but some Auburn, Sumner, Burien players also help out.

FWTC athletes shine at nationals

National track meet season just ended with the Federal Way Track Club leaving its prints everywhere it went.

The boys team took third place in the national meet at Indianapolis, Ind., giving the squad three-straight third place finishes.

"It was our third year in a row to get third for the boys and the girls seventh," said FWTC coach Darryl Genest. "It's a big accomplishment. We did very well. A runner of ours ran in the world championships."

David Goldstone of Spring Valley had that honor, coming away with a fifth place trophy.

The resident of 3741 SW 319th St. notified police that his identity had been stolen. The man was contacted by American Express

Police responded to a case of malicious mischief at the Avis Car Rental business at 32610 Pacific Highway South. The owner/manager reported that one of the rental vehicles was damaged overnight, between 6:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. the following morning. Vandals smashed the right rear window, but did not take anything from the vehicle.

The resident of 29258 12th Place South reported that his neighbor returned several pieces of opened mail that they found in their yard.

Taylor took one last drag on his cigarette before putting the car in first gear and guiding it into the parking slot. The deep royal blue custom paint, added less than five days ago, shimmered in the afternoon sunlight as the young man threw open the driver's side door and eased out of his black bucket seats. From the front of the vehicle, Taylor pointed out the twin chrome pipes of a turbo charger that whistled under the carbon-fiber hood.

Hoop camp returns

Applications are now being evaluated for The Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10 - 19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison. Players from 50 states and 17 foreign countries attended the 2004 camp. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team.

Audrey Gilbert

October 13, 1930 - August 10, 2005

Audrey died peacefully at home in Burien after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends. She leaves behind her daughter, Pam Abken and granddaughter, Stephanie.

At Audrey's request there will be no service. Donations may be made to Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Highline folks wish they could just be left alone

A few minutes after a corps of Seattle city department heads outlined the fact taxes would not soar nor would services be severely curtailed in the unincorporated North Highline area of it annexed to the city, a report on four focus groups showed residents of the area are not really hot about anything except keeping the status quo.

One of the four groups couldn't come to any decision on whether the area should remain in King County, become their own city, join Burien or annex to Seattle.

Sunday liquor sales to start Sept. 4

None in West Seattle, but 20 state liquor stores elsewhere will participate in a two-year pilot program beginning Sept. 4 to determine if Sunday sales are economically feasible.

The Sunday sales pilot program was established by the Legislature.

A list of the state stores chosen to participate in the program will be posted on the Liquor Control Board's website - www.liq.wa.gov.

The 20 state stores will open from noon to 5 p.m. except on Sundays falling on state holidays.

Amazing Grace, from beauty queen to graceful volunteer

With a smile that lights up the air around her, Grace Mason O'Neill takes up her sewing every Thursday morning at the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop on California Avenue.

She is called "Amazing Grace" not only because of her magical smile or the bright brown eyes that concentrate so intently on her mending, nor is it her nimble fingers that guide fine steel instruments so surely along their restorative path.
