Cool season container gardening tips

If you, like me, finally have time to plant your spring containers, do not be too hard on yourself. Now is an excellent time to plant containers for fall and winter interest, as both plants and containers are on sale at local nurseries and we've still got several weeks of fantastic weather to enjoy.

Before planting, make sure you have containers that are frost-proof, or at least frost-resistant.

Swedish accused of stonewalling union

Swedish Medical Center's plan to retool their benefits and new retirement plans have been met with great opposition from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Swedish is one of the last of its kind to offer a traditional pension plan.

"The reality is that all of the other hospitals in this area all made these changes in the mid-80s to early 90s," said Ron Sperling, Swedish's chief financial officer.

Study space gets facelift thanks to Sonics, Storm

The homework room in the Boys and Girls Club in Ballard has provided a place for K-8 students to study for many years, and recent improvements have made it an even better place for members and employees.

For years, there was concrete showing through the carpet in some places, and the setting sun coming in the room's east windows was blinding.

But all that changed when the new Reading and Learning Center, sponsored by the Sonics/Storm T.E.A.M.

Historic mural to be removed

Building repairs on the Olsen Furniture building at the south end of Bergen Place Park means the removal of a ten year-old mural from the side of the Olsen building.

Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Ballard Historical Society and the Seattle-Bergen Sister City Association are helping Olsen Furniture coordinate the removal.

Repairs on the building are slated to begin by Sept.

Estalene Beatrice (Brace) Rinnert

Estalene Beatrice (Brace) Rinnert passed away peacefully, on Thursday July 7, 2005 in Gig Harbor, WA. She was age 87. She was born January 12, 1918 to William E and Margaret (Bowmaker) Brace in Elbert Colorado. She married Myrven Rinnert of Kiowa, Colorado, June 29, 1937 in Golden, Colorado.

Myrven and Estalene lived in several places during their 58 years of marriage- CO, NM, CA and WA.

Deanna Marie MacCollom Rose

Age, 34, Born April 22, 1971 in Seattle, WA to Bruce & Rose MacCollom. She unexpectedly passed away on Friday, August 12, 2005 and her Mother, Rose Marie MacCollom, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2004; exactly one year to the day of her mother whom she loved very much. Deanna was preceded in death by her mother, Rose Marie. Deanna Graduated from West Seattle High School in 1989, As her Mother and Sister Shawna had. Deanna worked at TODD Shipyard where she met her special friend Ron Sykes.

She attended SSCC in hopes of becoming a nurse.

Robert "Lloyd" Wilson

Robert Lloyd Wilson died August 11, 2005, at the age of 88. Lloyd was born June 19, 1917, in Josephine, North Dakota. He married Myrtle Elaine Moon December 1945 and they resided in West Seattle for over 60 years. He is survived by his wife, sons and their wives Larry and Leslie Wilson, Kenneth and Christine Wilson,, foster son, Don Deems and wife Darlene three grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, and Allison, great grandson, Benjamin, and siblings Dr. Arthur Wilson and Mabel Johannesson.

He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

Ruth Chappell

Long-time West Seattle resident, Ruth J. Chappell, 84, died August 1, 2005, in Rathdrum, Idaho, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born August 18, 1920, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Helga Rasmusson from Denmark and Oscar K. Larson from Nebraska.

On June 18, 1938, Ruth married Howard F. Chappell in Papillion, Nebraska. They moved to West Seattle in 1940. She worked as a secretary for Boeing and retired in 1977.
