GARDENS

Japanese maples provide variety and color

Coming in a range of sizes and shapes and tolerant of a variety of light conditions, Japanese maples fit into the Northwest garden like soy milk in Chai tea lattes. This month and next are excellent times to purchase and plant Japanese maples in your garden, as the prices can be good and you can see the fall colors. On top of that, dare I say, the rains will be starting soon enough, so you will have time to get some solid root growth this fall.

Young people care about future of Monorail Project

There's been a lot of confusion and dismay in the last few weeks about the Seattle Monorail Project. It's been discussed in office hallways, in email and in coffeehouses all over the city and we've all been wrestling with the same question: What do we do next?

I would like to introduce a new group that we hope will be the answer to that question. We call ourselves 2045 Seattle.

Getting recognition

Thank you for the terrific article (Bookstore Launches Monthly Fundraiser - Aug. 17th 2005) written by your correspondent Melissa Santos. It clearly illustrated the philosophy behind our "Ten Percent For Change" program and we're sure it directly contributed to the success of the event. Thanks to the Ballard community's support, we were able to make a sizeable contribution to Residence XII. This was truly a successful event to launch our "Ten Percent For Change" program.

Thank you,
