Growth and change are coming to Des Moines

For 58 years, since 1947, our Chamber of Commerce has worked together with local businesses and residents for the community's good.

But by year's end, the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce as we have known it may close their office doors for the last time.

We're positioning ourselves to access more resources for future business growth and economic development here," Chamber President Jane Ipsen declared last week.

Take Sounder to the Seahawks

One of Sound Transit's most popular services kicked off again on Sept. 18 when Sounder's Seahawks Service resumed for all weekend home games at Qwest Field.

Seahawks service goes to King Street Station in Seattle, a short walk from Qwest Field. Sounder runs service between Tacoma and Seattle, with stops at stations in Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila; and between Everett and Seattle, with a stop in Edmonds.

The service will be offered on Sept. 25, Oct. 16, Oct. 23, Nov. 13, Nov. 27, Dec. 11 and Dec. 24.

Sounder trains depart Tukwila at 11:24 a.m.

Local tennis professional Steve Walters again offers area tennis lessons at outdoor locations this summer. Walters, certifed Pro 1 by the United States Professional Tennis Association since 1986, has coached at some of the world's top tennis resorts and academies in Florida, Caifornia, Texas and Canada. Also he traveled on the men's professional tour, including the 1988 U.S. Open, as a traveling coach for world-ranked pros and nationally-ranked juniors.

Sarah Martinez knocked in the Rams' opening goal in the seventh minute off a Nicole Murray assist, then Martinez scored again only on a Chanel Fuchigami assist in the 33rd minute. Jordan Taylor and Becky Harris assisted Martinez on a goal in the 37th minute.

Tax increases noted

Perhaps Commissioner Pat Davis's arithmetic is why the Port of Seattle is $4.8 billion in debt.

At the Sept. 7 CASE meeting interviews, she claimed to have cut property taxes by one third. In her Voters Pamphlet statement, she made the same false claim.

A state audit shows a $35 million property tax assessment until 2002, when Davis and other Port commissioners increased that tax to $39.3 million. In 2003, they increased the tax to $57.8 million.
