Chinook, Cascade, Midway face sanctions

Six Highline public schools did not make "adequate yearly progress" during the last school year as defined by federal standard..

The designation is based on test scores from the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) taken by fourth, seventh and tenth-graders last spring.

However three of the schools do not receive Title I federal funds so are not subject to federal sanctions under the No Child Left Behind Act. Highline receives $3.3 million in Title I funds yearly.

Teacher assesses WASL

Evaluate intangibles too

Tests of one kind or another have always been with us. Many tests are necessary, worthwhile, and are the only or best way to measure something.

Lately however, with more and more weight put behind standardized testing it seems tests have become a be-all, end-all - something they should not be.

As a teacher I see the effects of the drive to conquer the WASL, Washington's assessment of student learning.

Ballard high girls swim for charity

The Ballard High School girls swimming team is aiming for the state playoffs at several positions this season, but plans to take some time off on Oct. 1 to hold a Swim-a-Thon, event to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Team members came up with the idea of organizing a Swim-a-Thon, at the Ballard Pool from 7-10 p.m. that evening.

"It's something the girls wanted to do," said Head Coach Carlos Palacian.

The team has not come up with the exact format for the fundraiser, but swimmers will most likely swim laps or distances for pledges.

For Ballardites, traveling by Monorail would be no better than busses

According to the Seattle Monorail Project (SMP), the proposed Green Line monorail would be "fast" and "convenient." For most of those who would use it to get between Ballard and downtown, the monorail would actually be slower and/or less convenient than using current express buses.

There are four different express bus routes between Ballard and downtown. In Ballard and Crown Hill there are about 60 bus stops on these four routes.
