Rams rule at four team meet against rivals

Mount Rainier Rams sophomore Ryan Prentice ran a good race, beating out junior teammate Aaron Smith, for first place on the boys side of things, while Rams freshman Alison Vrbanac took the girls race closely over Highline's Julia Miller.

The Rams teams won both cross country meets at Evergreen High School Thursday.

"Finally got him," said Prentice, who has been eating the dust of teammate Aaron Smith all season in the first four Seamount League meets.

Proponents begin veterans, health levy campaign

The campaign for King County Proposition 1 - the Veterans and Healthy Communities Levy - was officially launched last week.

Proposition 1 would increase funding for health and human services - an estimated $13.3 million a year for six years - by raising the county's property tax by 5 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.The average homeowner would pay about $15 more in property tax on a $300,000 home.

Annual community meeting set for Burien on Oct. 26

The city of Burien will hold its annual community meeting Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Sylvester Middle School, 16222 Sylvester Rd. SW.

This event gives the public an opportunity to meet city council members, the city manager and other officials, ask questions, and learn about the latest city projects.

An open house at which displays will be available for viewing will be followed by a question-and-answer session from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Fire District 2 recieves grant for wellness/fitness program

King County Fire District 2, the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department, has received a $61,636 grant from the 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The funds will be used to institute a Wellness/Fitness program that has been accepted and encouraged by both the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Firefighters.

The program focuses on firefighter health, safety and injury prevention through fitness and nutritional counseling and exercise.

Scrap the monorail

Your editorial (the one on page A6, not page 1, Oct. 12) finally got it right: We need a plan.

But we also need to understand what a plan is. It is not the daily press releases from Seattle Monorail Project that they have still another "plan" to make the monorail affordable.

It means gathering together knowledgeable people to first define the problem (quantify it, not just that traffic is a mess) and then offer candidate solutions.
