Commuting outside the box

Dean Wong

Last week my car was in the shop for a couple of days, so I decided to take the bus home. It takes an hour and a half to get home on the number 18 bus to downtown, followed by the number 36 bus making its way south on Third Avenue, through the Chinatown International District and onto Beacon Hill.

I boarded the number 18 on Northwest Market Street on Halloween. There was a woman with a pirate's hat.

Gearing up for giving

With the Thanksgiving holiday fast approaching, the Ballard Food Bank is hoping to provide 7,200 pounds of turkey to needy families and is seeking the public's help to reach that goal.

Each year, the agency's Adopt-a-Family program makes the holiday a little brighter for 40 to 50 families.

Zoo design flaw?

The Woodland Park Zoo is building a new edition but instead of animals, this one holds cars. Plans call for a four floor parking garage in the north west corner of the zoo, with capacity for 700 automobiles. Some neighbors feel officials ignored public input on the design of the garage, after a design committee advocated an underground garage be built on the opposite side of the park.

Continue the progress

In every person's life they are judged. Results determine a person's performance, not gossip, innuendo or partisan labels. A businessman, teacher or parent is measured by his (her) performance - so are elected officials.

As Highline Water Commissioner for the past six years, Jerry Guite has made "You" the customer his top priority.

Fall cleaning

The calendar says it's officially autumn, so it's time to pick up some of the gardening chores left behind from summer's heat.

Now is the time to renovate the lawn - if you really have to have one. Select grass seed that fits the location - sun, shade or a combination thereof. Remember to keep the seed bed moist. Grass seed needs light to germinate so don't cover more than an inch.

Fall drought is common in Puget Sound, so keep the hose handy: recently transplanted evergreens will need to be watered regularly.

The children's picture book

I have the good fortune to spend part of my working day in the children's area of the West Seattle public library. Here I have encountered the wonderful imaginings of writers and artists in a format that, given my childless "growed-up" state, might otherwise have passed me by - the children's picture book.

When I had to have my own copy of No Friends (1986) by James Stevenson (contributing illustrator to The New Yorker) I knew I had stumbled upon an unexpected source of adult entertainment.

At The Admiral

David Dobkin's latest film "Wedding Crashers" may be to romantic comedy what "My Dinner with Andre" was to dining out. Both movies stand as tributes to the transcendent effect on ordinary events of articulate people saying really loopy things.

John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) are divorce mediators by day who crash weddings in their free time. For these two slacker con artists life is good. Both their profession and hobby seem to represent a happy convergence of talent and opportunity.
