Use a modular building

I was viewing a recent meeting of the Burien City Council when everyone was discussing the viability of the environmental studies structure planned for Seahurst Park and realized that I had some concerns.

First of all, I have to say that I have known Georgette Valle practically my whole life and consider her a friend and have great respect for her contributions to local politics as a former city council member and a legislator in Olympia.

Don't blow the future

Regarding Earline Byers’ “Over the Fence” column and the letter from 11-year-old Elizabeth Scher of Puyallup on what she would do if she was president. She is to be congratulated for writing to a paper and expressing her views, if indeed they really are her views, and being hopefully interested in the world around her.

However, I don’t want her or anyone with her opinions in charge of the country, even if I am 64 years old. We already have enough of them running around. They are called Liberal Democrats, ACLU members, People for the American Way, etc.

Deep N. Highline divisions between Burien, Seattle

If the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council was hoping for guidance from the public, it didn't get much at a Nov. 21 "listening session" at Evergreen High School.

Public testimony indicated that deep divisions remain among community residents over how North Highline should be governed.

Nine people said they want to be annexed by Burien, eight preferred Seattle, and one wanted to split North Highline between the two cities.

New season means new hope for Beaver basketball

Dean Wong

There's a sense of urgency over at the Ballard Beavers boy's basketball practices as a new coaching staff takes over and players respond with renewed energy.

Former Ballard player Billy Rodgers returns to his alma mater as the head coach, 13 years after he graduated and hung up his sneakers.

"It's great to be back," said Rodgers who has coached at North Seattle Community College and University Prep.

Senior Collin Belcher likes what he sees so far in training camp. "I enjoy Billy a lot. He's good for the program.

Nice to see you again, old chum

Dean Wong

There was a celebration at Carkeek Park last Friday and the guest of honor was the chum salmon that have been swimming up the creek in recent weeks.

The Annual Piper's Creek Salmon event drew crowds of children and adults to view the salmon and learn about the importance of taking care of our water quality.

This fall, the salmon have returned earlier than in past years. The first one was observed on November 13.
