What locks beneath canal?

In here it smells like Ivar's restaurant a few days after the power went out. The walls feel like wet broken glass. Your feet splash in cold, ankle deep water and they crunch and squish on a carpet of muscles, barnacles and anemones. When it's empty the big lock is an 800 foot long concrete fish tank. It's slippery in spots but DO NOT grab at the wall to keep your balance.

"You won't know you're cut until you bleed," says Army Corps' Dru Butterfield, giving a safety talk before the tour.

Let true Thanksgiving spirit fill your heart

Special to the Times/News

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. Maybe because it revolves around food. And family. And fending off the daunting winter gloom with feasting and festivity. Plus, what other holiday comes with an automatic four-day weekend?

As kids, we always went downtown on Thanksgiving with all my cousins to the Washington Athletic Club, courtesy of my grandparents, who were members.

Nelson honored to serve

Thank-you so much for your overwhelming support for my reelection. I’m very honored to serve the community and I'm looking forward to a productive four-year term.

As I've said so often, Burien could not have achieved its successful goals without the help of an excellent staff and the hundreds of citizen volunteers who work so hard for this wonderful city.

It's always easy to complain and oppose change.

Fall's fallen leaves can provide free mulch

As serious cold continues to hold off around Puget Sound, the Lazy Garden offers a few remaining rose and fuchsia blooms.

Despite mildew, dahlias and asters add unexpected color to the late garden. Cherish these final twinges of summer as they will soon be gone.

Falling autumn leaves can present a problem, as well as an opportunity. Leaves collecting along streets and roadways can lead to clogged gutters, flooded streets and urban flooding.
