Councilman faulted for not understanding interest

Mr. Gordon Shaw, thank you for sharing your side of the story. I read from your description that this incident started out as a friend (Mr. Shaw) helping a friend (Ms. McGilton) with a problem. As I continued to read I begin to understand the transaction between the neighbor (Mr. Halsen) and Ms. McGilton was developing into a win-win situation.

However, where things begin to cloud is in the middle when Mr. Shaw indicates that he approached the Water District 49 manager to explain the situation. Mr.

Read catalogs while waiting for soil to dry

The rain continues as we exceed by more than 14 inches the normal amount for the winter rainy season. As mentioned before, waterlogged soils are not only at risk for slides but for drowning plants that prefer dryer roots.

Soaked soils can also play havoc with septic system drainage fields and just about any soil alteration.

It’s going to be a while before soils dry out enough for serious late-winter gardening.

Even though there's no option, we still have choices

“You choose,” my husband was saying to me.

As if we had a choice, I was thinking. It wasn’t like picking out drapes for the living room.

We were with John’s doctor, filling out a form called “Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment” or POLST. It’s the latest approach to planning ahead for medical emergencies.

Forms like this tip-toe carefully around the word “death.” We have LIVING wills and LIFE-sustaining treatment.

Port survives in lion's den

During the bitter third-runway fight, the Highline NIMBYS predicted, if construction was allowed to go ahead, muddy airport water would spill into neighboring salmon-bearing streams.

The die-hards claimed detention ponds would also fail, sending turbid water into the wetlands.

Guess what?

Those incidents and more occurred in the last few months.

The state Department of Ecology has fined the Port of Seattle and its main contractor, TTI Constructors, $111,000 for allowing seven releases of muddy water into neighboring creeks and for pumping over t

Minor surgery leaves him driving with Miss Doozy

I admit that I am a little nervous when Elsbeth gets behind the wheel. This doesn't happen often, but sometimes is necessary, like right now, while I am recovering from minor eye surgery for cataracts. (See her commentary about this in her own words below.*)

I feel funny, like the I am being chauffeured by one of the Seven Dwarfs. But she has never had an accident and only got stopped one time for going the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Seattle.

Feast at South Seattle Community College brings tears

We had dinner with the Earl of West Seattle the other night. That is Earl Cruzen, of course, and his Lady Ada.

In fact, it was at the annual South Seattle Community college auction fund raiser and somehow Earl had wangled table No. 1. We sat next to Kay Knapton and her husband Jim Beley. I have been to a lot of these functions but never one bigger.

Earl is pretty exalted himself so I was not too surprised they honored him .He has been Mr. West Seattle for many years and deserves a bronze statue some place on the campus.
