Carpet retailer praised

It's time to remind each other why we should shop locally and support small businesses. We are fortunate in Burien to have such wonderful businesses as Dan the Sausageman, Sweet Petula’s, Han’s Deli, Lollipops, etc. Our experience with Nielsen Bros., though, is that which I wish to discuss.

Recently my husband and I needed to replace carpets in our two bedrooms, and as conscientious shoppers with a tight budget, we searched for sales, traveled around the city and then returned to where our first instincts guided us, to Nielsen Bros. Flooring Inc. in Burien.

An unnecessary tax hike

I hope all those people who voted to accept the $0.095 tax increase per gallon of gas are happy, especially when they realize that the rejection of this unnecessary increase could have at least offset the latest Department of Transportation robbery for a Vehicle Weight Allowance.

On my Vehicle Renewal Notice this Vehicle Weight charge for my compact vehicle is $10 and represents an increase of 20 percent from prior years’ vehicle renewal charge, not to mention that every tankful of gas now costs me an average of $7.20 to cover the Federal and state gas tax that

Keep momentum going

Next Tuesday, voters in the Highline School District should keep the momentum going on the district's replacement of aging school buildings by approving a $148 million bond measure.

The bond would fund the construction of four elementaries, renovation of Camp Waskowitz, improvement of secondary-school security, and update technology and repair school roofs. A fifth elementary would be replaced using state matching funds.

Four years ago, voters approved a $189.5 million school-construction bond.

Voters to decide school bond Tuesday

Parents in the Highline School District could track their child's grades, homework assignments and attendance over the Internet if voters approve a proposed $148 million bond on Tuesday.

The bond needs a 60 percent supermajority yes vote to pass.

An enhanced student data system is part of $9 million in technology upgrades in the proposed bond.

The bond would also fund $2 million for additional security surveillance cameras, fencing and lighting at the district's middle and high schools.

By far the largest chunk -- $124.2 million -

Realtors cite high home values in bond endorsement

The Seattle-King County Association of Realtors has endorsed the Highline School District’s March 14 Capital Facilities Improvement bond ballot measure.

The association is backing its endorsement with a contribution to Highline Citizens for Schools, a volunteer group that is managing the “yes” campaign on the bond.

In addition, the association pledged to promote “yes” votes by its members in the Highline district, and to encourage local Realtors to help with “get out the vote” efforts for the March 14 election.
